Mindfulness is not a new practice, nor is it one that is solely relegated to mental health. It's just one of the things that seems to help me the most in life.
Mindfulness is defined as the state of being conscious or aware of something which is an overly simplistic, but very accurate way of depicting the notion of mindfulness in our lives. It is simply being aware of what is happening and why it is happening without rushing to judge or change it.
This is a powerful tool.
Especially for someone like me who cannot always trust her immediate reactions or emotions regarding something. Taking the step back to mindfully process something allows me the time I need to evaluate and react in an appropriate manner.
I also think that living mindfully allows us to live in the moment and appreciate what we are doing in the time it's happening rather than always planning and looking forward to some esoteric thing in the future. This approach can be helpful with regards to food for those who tend to overeat (like myself) as we can slow down and savor each bite rather than rushing through the meal.
Overall it's a slower more intentional way of living and practicing mindfulness has truly helped me to live a calmer better life. I haven't been practicing it as much lately, and I can definitely tell a difference in my moods and the cycling of my moods.
Have you practiced mindfulness before?
On my podcast there are mindfulness techniques in the archives where I go over specific activities someone can do to practice a more mindful life. You can find that link at the top of this page! I would love if you subscribed and listened.
